1,000 Books Before Kindergarten

Give your child an academic advantage and discover ways to make reading fun with the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program.

A non-profit organization designed for charitable, literary, and educational purposes, the 1,000 Books Foundation strives to get children excited about reading and encourage family bonding by making the activity a priority during the early years of life.

Simple and self-paced, the program is available at libraries around the country and lets you choose which books to read on your 1,000 book journey. By breaking the lofty goal down and reading one book per day, you can complete the challenge in less than three years!

Full instructions and a recommended reading list are available on the 1,000 Books Foundation website. Navigate to their home page for other helpful resources, including information about the benefits of starting the program while your child is still in the womb, tips for tracking progress in a journal or on the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten app, and success stories about other families who have taken the reading pledge.

What are some of your children’s favorite books?
