1,000 Cupcakes, 4 Flavors, 1 Sweet Victory for Homeschool Family

Two homeschoolers recently won the pilot show for Cupcake Wars Kids, a reality competition cooking series that airs on The Food Network.

Joshua and Rachael Guthrie earned their win by baking 1,000 cupcakes in four different flavors and displaying them on a Scooby Doo-themed Mystery Machine van. The brother and sister team used all non-GMO (genetically modified organism) whole foods to make their cupcakes from scratch, beating out a strong competition that included a child who had previously appeared on TV with Rachael Ray, a young chef who had designed recipes at the white house, and a child of an L.A. actress.

“We were up against some serious people,” their mother Claire told author Dave Dentel for an HSLDA guest blog post. “They had a lot of experience we didn’t have.”

Because of her battle with Crohn’s Disease, 15-year-old Rachael is unable to taste her winning delicacies; however, the flexibility of homeschooling has allowed her to maintain a healthy diet. Above all, the Guthries are thankful for their opportunity to share their faith and their cupcakes in the national spotlight.

“The Lord has opened so many doors because of this,” said Claire.
