15-Year-Old Homeschooler Might Be the Next Einstein

Throughout his brief time in college, former homeschool student Grant Harter made quite an impression on his professors not just because of his knowledge in physics, but also because of his age.

"When he told me he was 15, I was pretty shocked," Erik Sanchez, a physics professor at Portland State University, told The Oregonian. "He's definitely one of the top students, and I think basically it's his seriousness and dedication, time-wise. He shows a lot of maturity."

At 6’2”, Harter’s height made it easier to hide his age. More importantly though, his impressive knowledge of physics and quantum mechanics made it clear that he belonged in the college setting.

"He's a smart one, there's no doubt," Sanchez added, “and if he goes down that route he might be able to achieve some amazing things. He might turn out to be the next Einstein, who knows...He could be a real contributor to the theoretical physics world."

While Harter’s future plans are to continue his studies at a master’s program in theoretical physics under Nobel-Prize winning physicist Peter Higgs at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, Harter knows he wouldn’t have made it this far without a single mom who chose to homeschool him and once encouraged him to read 100 picture books in a week.

"Home schooling was a huge part of our safety bubble," Harter’s mom said. "That was our way of coping, to go into this world where this whole world opens up for you and it's safer."
