3 Educational Ways to Celebrate Star Trek

Whether you identify as a Trekker or Trekkie, if you’re a Star Trek fan, you’re celebrating The Original Series’ golden anniversary today.

In the 50 years since that first trip on the original Enterprise, the franchise continues to live long and prosper, including five additional television series and 13 films. There’s also no end in sight. A new television series titled Star Trek: Discovery is slated to premiere in January 2017.

As you spend the day celebrating the series that started it all, check out three fun ways to keep things educational for your homeschoolers:

Explore the History of Space Travel
Travel back in time to meet the fathers of rocketry and learn about the scientific concepts that contributed to their success, such as Kepler’s Laws of Planetary Motion and Newton’s Laws of Motion.

Create a Timeline of Space Exploration
Include the historical events that led to space travel, as well as monumental flights that have taken place, including Sputnik 1 and 2, Vostok 1, Friendship 7, and Apollo 11.

Study Star Trek Technology We Use Today
While communicators and on-board computers were once the stuff of science fiction, they exist today in the form of cell phones and navigational technology. Research the development of these devices and add significant moments from their history to your timeline.
