4 Ways to Improve Your Family's Health and Nutrition

As spring-like weather lures residents of snowy states back outdoors, many who have been in a state of near hibernation for the winter months are motivated to get back in shape. As you set fitness goals for the spring and summer months, check out four tips from AOP for improving homeschool health and nutrition during the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics’ annual National Nutrition Month®.

Put safety first. Though we often jump straight to eating right and exercising regularly when we think of health and nutrition, proper food preparation is just as important to our wellbeing. Check out important food safety tips to practice with your homeschooler.

Make a meal plan. In addition to helping you eat healthy, planning meals in advance can help you stay organized and save money. Check out several one, two, and four-week menu planners from Money Saving Mom.

Plan your garden. Growing your own fruits and veggies is a great way to ensure you’re putting quality fuel into your family’s bodies. Gardening also presents a variety of homeschool lesson opportunities. From the science of growing plants to the economics of selling produce at a nearby farmers’ market, there is a lot to learn in your own back yard.

Train for a family 5K. As the weather warms and your children beg to go outside, use the opportunity to train together. Many charities host annual fun runs or competititions, and lots of resources exist to help you train for a 5K in as few as 30-minutes a day. Research your favorite organizations to see if there’s a way to support them and accomplish your fitness goals at the same time.
