Are You a Middle-Class Homeschool Family?

While nearly 70% of Americans would self-label themselves as middle-class, only 50% meet the technical qualifications based on their income level.

According to the Pew Research Center, the middle class is defined by an annual household income that is two-thirds to double the national median. In 2016, that median was $57,617.

“By that definition, a middle-income three-person household earns about $45,000 to $135,000,” wrote Emmie Martin for CNBC. “If you’re single, a salary of around $26,000 to $78,000 qualifies you as middle-income.”

Pew’s research indicated that 20% of our country is considered upper-class, while the lower-class is comprised of 30% of the population. Over the past half-century, the middle-class has shrunk by approximately 10%, but the number of middle-class citizens has remained stable since 2011. Overall, the survey results indicated that Americans are concerned about the expanding gap between the upper and middle-classes.

“Nearly 40 percent of survey respondents said that moving from middle- to upper-class is the least likely kind of class mobility that could occur today,” Martin wrote.
