This Is the Time…

“Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it” (Proverbs 22:6).

How do you spend your time during the homeschool day? Are you constantly glancing at the clock, checking your to-do list, and thinking of what you need to add to the lesson plan? Your kids rely on you to give them an education that will carry them throughout college or other ventures after graduation. Yet, they also depend on you to teach them more than just the content in their lesson plan. They count on you to take advantage of the flexibility and memories that homeschooling offers. Christian homeschooling offers many moments of teaching, leading by example, and enjoying the small things in life before your children grow up.

Homeschooling is the time to…
-Recognize that your learners are your kids, not just students.
-Build your children up with words of affirmation that will create a foundation of self-confidence as they grow up.
-Be an example to your children as you handle difficult decisions, financial pitfalls, and self-doubt.  
-Treasure the laughter, even if it is in a public place designated for quiet talk.
-Set aside individual time with each child to show how much you love him or her.
-Teach your children not only practical life skills, but also spiritual knowledge. Just because children grow up in a Christian household or go to Sunday school does not necessarily mean that they are retaining and understanding Biblical concepts. Teach them to memorize Scripture, help them understand parables, and show them the importance of daily devotions. -Make family memories, not just school memories.
-Pray for your children as they grow up and take each step toward spiritual maturity and adulthood.
-Laugh. Let go of your strict schedule. Look to the heavens and smile. Life is short, so even when your days are full of chaos, remember, “The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace” (Exodus 14:14).

Homeschooling is the time to recognize the small moments, the laughter, and the gifts in answer to prayers. Don’t let special homeschool moments slip through your fingers as “just another day.” Instead, treasure each homeschooling experience as invaluable time to love, teach, and laugh with your children.
