Connect Your Homeschooler with a Pen Pal

Connect Your Homeschooler with a Pen Pal

With advancements in technology over the past 20 years, the art of letter writing has dwindled. However, it’s not uncommon to hear a story of decade or even life-long pen pals who met via mail during their elementary years.

Connecting your homeschooler with a writing buddy is a great way to keep her engaged in learning throughout the summer months. Take a look at the topics your homeschooler can practice and explore as she corresponds with a child from another place. Plus, get tips on setting your child up with her own pen pal.

Topics to Explore

1. Language
Corresponding with someone via mail gives your student an opportunity to practice her written communication skills. In addition to enhancing English grammar and spelling, she may learn a few new terms unique to her pen pal’s region or culture.

2. Geography
Locate the home city of your child’s pen pal on a map and encourage her to ask about topics such as climate, animals, and major landmarks in the area.

3. Penmanship
In a world overrun by technology, presenting your child with a new, exciting way to practice penmanship is a great way to improve legibility.

4. Social Studies
Encourage your homeschooler to ask questions about history, government, and culture as she writes her letters. In addition, help her research similar topics in her region to provide helpful information to her new friend.

Two Ways to Connect Your Student with a Pen Pal

1. Network with family and friends.
Though there are unique differences between the two, there are perks to both domestic and international pen pals. Speak with family and friends who like to travel to find out where across the globe they may have connections to families with children similar in age to yours. If your church participates in mission work, check in with the volunteers to see if they can connect you with international candidates.

2. Online pen pal matching services.
Though they can provide you with some unique opportunities, be sure to use caution when exploring online pen pal options. Always do a thorough search on the company’s background before using an online program. In addition, never post your personal information online. Consider using a PO Box instead of your direct mailing address to keep your exact location anonymous.
