Crafting Mission and Vision Statements for Your Homeschool

The beginning of the school year is an excellent time to establish goals and objectives for your homeschool. As a result, you might consider creating homeschool mission and vision statements with your spouse before the new school year begins.

Used by Fortune 500 companies, non-profit organizations, churches, and more, the two statements work together to guide a group’s activities and intentions. They are great tools to return to for guidance throughout the year when the going gets tough.

According to TopNonprofits, a mission statement is a single sentence that defines an organization’s purpose. In contrast, a vision statement is a single sentence that summarizes an organization’s long-term goal. While both should be clear, concise, and memorable, vision statements should also be inspirational.

Take a quick look at Alpha Omega Publications’ mission and vision statements before you begin writing your own. Our mission, or reason for existence, is to “Educate, inspire, and change lives.” Our vision, or ultimate goal, is “Changing education for the glory of God.” Both are short, simple, and easy to commit to memory, and the vision statement also inspires.

Consider these few big questions as you craft your homeschool mission and vision.

Why did we decide to homeschool, and why have we chosen to continue the practice?
The answer to this question may start as a novel, but trim it down to a short and simple sentence and you have your mission! Especially if you have multiple children, you may have a few different answers. Perhaps you have one child with special learning needs, another who studies at an advanced level for her age, and a desire to provide them both with a Christ-centered education. In that case, your mission statement might look something like this:

“Integrating Christ with academics to help our children excel.”

What do we hope to accomplish by educating our children at home?
All new homeschool parents dream of the ways their decision to educate at home will impact their children. As you answer this question, take your children’s long-term goals into consideration, too. Do they want to attend college, pursue a job right after graduation, or enter the armed forces? No matter how much their answers differ, strive to craft a vision statement that guides you in helping them achieve both your goals and theirs. The vision statement for the family mentioned above might look something like this:

“Equipping our children to leave the nest with a passion for Christ and the self-confidence to chase their unique dreams.”

Keep in mind that the statements you create at the beginning of the year aren’t set in stone for the rest of your homeschool career. Rather, they can serve as a guide while you get your feet underneath you and can be tweaked at any time as you see fit.
