DIY Solar Eclipse Viewer

Covering the last total solar eclipse in North America on February 26, 1979, ABC Evening News anchor Frank Reynolds said in a special report, “Not until August 21st, 2017, will another eclipse be visible from North America. That’s 38 years from now. May the shadow of the moon fall in a world at peace.”

While the world in 2017 may not be as peaceful as Reynolds hoped for nearly four decades ago, the fascination with the rare solar eclipse has not waned. This year, 14 states will experience totality in a narrow 70-mile wide corridor, while a partial eclipse will be visible in all 50 states. To make sure you’re fully prepared to view this grand spectacle, try making this DIY eclipse viewer to see a reflection of the sun from a cereal box.

Important Reminder: Looking directly at the sun is unsafe. Please read NASA’s “How to View the 2017 Solar Eclipse Safely” to protect your family’s eyesight.
