“Do Not Fear” Is Most Read Bible Verse of 2020

In a year of uncertainty, a record number of people sought comfort in the most reassuring source possible on Earth, the Bible.

Totaling more than 600 million searches throughout the year, the popular YouVersion Bible app saw an 80% increase in searches over 2019 with Isaiah 41:10 ranking as the most searched, read, and bookmarked verse on the app in the United States.

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God,” God’s Word reads from the context of the Israelites captivity in Babylon. “I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

“Through every hardship, people continue to seek God and turn to the Bible for strength, peace, and hope,” YouVersion founder Bobby Gruenewald told Christianity Today. “While 2020 is a year so many say they’d like to forget, we see it as a year to remember how God used the Bible App to help so many people who are searching for answers.”

While Isaiah 41:10 was also the most popular verse in India, South Africa, the Netherlands, and the Philippines, the top verses in other countries carried a similar message.

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God,” reads Philippians 4:6, the top verse in Ghana.

Meanwhile, Romans 8:28 was the most popular verse in Kenya. “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

Overall, YouVersion’s 2020 stats reported over 43 billion chapters were read on their app this year with over 500 million shared verses.
