Friday Nights at Lighthouse: Sharing Faith Through Football

Under the Friday night lights, a high school football team in the Queen City of the Ozarks is receiving recognition for both its play and conduct on the football field.

For the Lighthouse Christian Chargers and their star running back Ben Friend, their most important goal is to bring glory and honor to Jesus Christ. However, as the two-time reigning and defending National Homeschool Football Association champions, they’ve also proven they’re quite good at the game they play.

“We want to open eyeballs to the Lord. That’s the point of all of it mostly,” Friend said in a recent interview for the Springfield News-Leader, “but we love to show other people we can play ball.”

Based in Springfield, Missouri, Lighthouse Christian received approval in 2014 to play public and private schools in the state. Since then, they’ve gained credibility as more than just a homeschool football team. More importantly, they’ve worked hard at their mission to share their faith with teammates and opponents.

“At the end of the game, we ask the guys from the other team if they want to meet up in the middle and share compliments for the other team, and then we pray at the end,” said Friend.

Despite a 4-3 record so far this year, Lighthouse Christian is ranked #2 in the nation according to the National Homeschool Football Association. The 2015 tournament begins November 18 in Panama City Beach, Florida.
