Fun and Frugal Father’s Day Crafts

Fun and Frugal Father's Day CraftsWhether the dad in your homeschool family is an athlete, artist, executive, handyman, technology whiz, or anything in between, he'll love being on the receiving end of a thoughtful gift from his favorite fan this Father's Day. Try these fun and frugal suggestions for crafts that are sure to keep homeschooling kids busy, challenge them creatively, and produce winning gift ideas for Dad's special day.

Dad's Survival Kit

Like a handmade card, the Dad's Survival Kit can be personalized for your family by varying the design and contents.

1. Gather a small box with a lid, magazines or photos you can cut up, scissors, glue, pencils, crayons, paper, yarn or ribbon, and contact paper. Then, decorate the box with magazine images or photos and secure them with clear contact paper.

Dad's Survival Kit2. Fill the box with goodies that remind Dad of his child and make him smile. For example, include a photo, a drawing of your child doing something fun with Dad, a chocolate kiss, a handprint or footprint, a small toy to remind Dad of the importance of playtime, a book to remind him of storytime, an object that represents an activity they share, or a note in the child's handwriting.

3. Once all the contents for the survival kit are collected, secure the box with yarn or ribbon, label it "Dad's Survival Kit," and watch his face light up when it's presented to him!

Father's Day Tie Card

Handmade cards are like snowflakes. No two are exactly alike. Not only will Dad love getting a unique greeting crafted by his child, but he'll also appreciate the money saved by making the most of inexpensive household art supplies.

1. Gather a piece of cardstock or heavy construction paper, scissors, glue, markers or crayons, an old tie, and five small white buttons. (Alternatives to real buttons include paper circles formed by a hole punch or hand-drawn circles).

Tie card2. Draw an "M" on the top 1/3 of the cardstock to divide the top 1/3 into five equal size triangles. Then, cut out the middle triangle and two outside triangles, so two are left.

3. Draw a line down the center of the cardstock. To the right of that line, glue on three of the buttons.

4. The tie can be created from construction paper or the bottom of an old tie. (Be sure to ask Dad first!) First, glue the top of the tie to the card. The rest of the tie should be free to move. Fold the two triangles down to create collar flaps and glue them. Finally, glue the two remaining buttons on each collar flap.

5. Glue a small paper rectangle onto the shirt for the pocket. Glue three sides of the pocket but leave the top open. Cut out a small piece of paper for the handkerchief and write your Father's Day message on it. Finally, tuck the note in the pocket.

Additional Suggestions

Another creative way for kids to say "Happy Father's Day" is making a theme gift basket. Start with an ordinary basket from a discount store, line it with plastic wrap or tissue paper, and start brainstorming. Themes could include the outdoors, computers, cars, tools, music, or movies. Kids could also design handmade coupons for Dad to exchange for extra hugs and kisses or chores around the house, or they could write an original poem.

While your child crafts, offer extra Father's Day inspiration by sharing stories of biblical dads like Abraham (Genesis 22) and our heavenly Father, who “so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son” (John 3:16).

I think the survival kit is a wonderful idea to implement into dad\'s day. My children and I decided to get a lunch bag cooler for his lunch (break), with a separate storage at the bottom for his bible and a written prayer(s). It\'s hard enough for them to survive everyday out there in the world. Sometimes they need a little reminder or encouragement to help them through. I also think it\'s a great idea for families who\'s fathers are away serving our country and litterally serviving out there. GOD BLESS THEM & THEY ARE FOREVER IN THE PRAYERS OF MY FAMILY.
