Great Ideas for Family Fun Night

Though it’s good to have go-to activities for family fun night, it’s also easy to get stuck in a rut of watching movies or rotating through the same few games. The next time your family spends an evening together, change up your routine and try one of these engaging activities.

Make a family cookbook. Ask everyone in your household to choose his/her three favorite meals and type up the recipes on the computer. Then, have each individual draw illustrations to accompany the entries. If you want to make the book a little more formal, make and photograph each meal over the course of several weeks and add the images to the cookbook. The finished product makes a great Christmas gift for extended family.

Build a bird feeder. Not only is this project great for family fun night, but it also adds something educational to your homeschool. In the weeks to come, your kids can watch and identify the different types of birds that eat from the feeder. Pinterest has a variety of DIY feeder ideas that use simple household objects or snazzier, more decorative items.

Hold a service night. Spend an evening working on projects that benefit your community. Make care packages to send to missionaries or members of the military, visit a nursing home, or make a meal for a member of your church family who is going through a difficult time.

Watch home movies. Instead of holding an ordinary family movie night, pull out those home videos that document the early years of your kids’ lives. Revisit their first crawl, walk, Christmas, and birthday, and share those special memories with your children.

Prepare a formal dinner. As a family, pick a fancy meal you’d like to try and prepare it together. Pull out your best dinnerware and teach your children the proper way to set the table. Just before dinner is served, encourage everyone to change into a favorite formal outfit and enjoy your meal.

Decorate seasonal centerpieces. This fun project can be repeated over and over again as the seasons change and as your children grow up. You can get items for the decorations from a craft store or be resourceful and scour your yard for flowers, leaves, pine cones, rocks, etc. to use in your creation. Again, Pinterest is a great site to visit for inspiration!

Make a time capsule. This activity doubles as an excuse for your children to clean their rooms. Ask them to sift through their belongings and pull out a few items that they treasure or that are unique to this time period. Place the items in a box and stow them away until graduation day. Take the activity one step further by interviewing one another and creating videos to include in the time capsule.
