Kathleen Ashcraft
With a zest for learning, Kathleen Ashcraft looks forward to her children's daily lessons almost as much as they do.

A homeschooling mom near Seattle, Washington, Ashcraft doesn't mind admitting she often picks up tidbits of knowledge herself while teaching Theodora (Teddy), 13, and Larry, 12.

"I like to learn, too," Ashcraft said. "I just came to the conclusion that if you don't know it, you can't teach it, especially math."

KathleenKathleen has been homeschooling for seven years, and according to her friend Judy Demetris, she has never really looked to anyone else to do it. Kathleen's pioneering attitude even inspired Judy to homeschool her own kids.

"I just fell in love with the curriculum and the idea of homeschooling," Kathleen explained. "I do it to give them a Christian foundation and a better education."

The Ashcrafts have always used Switched-On Schoolhouse, which Kathleen appreciates for allowing Teddy and Larry to work at their own pace and level. She supplements lessons with as much reading and writing as possible. Right now, her children are listening to Don Quixote on tape and participating in weekly writing workshops.

Teddy, in particular, has excelled. Recently, the preteen began teaching Sunday school classes using her SOS Bible curriculum, a move that Kathleen heartily supports. Larry, a more hands-on learner who enjoys making swords and bows and arrows out of sticks, looks up to his tremendously driven big sister.

Judy said she has always considered Kathleen a model homeschooling mom, whether she's teaching Teddy and Larry another language or guiding them through science and art projects for local contests.

"You see the proof in her children," Judy said. "I'm just always impressed."

For her diligence and encouragement, Alpha Omega Publications is pleased to name Kathleen Ashcraft as August's Homeschool Parent of the Month.
