Laurie Rodriguez
Laurie Rodriguez is a homeschooling mom who thinks outside the box. If school starts to lag and Laurie senses her students (Larissa, 9, and Kaitlyn, 7) need a break from the traditional classroom, she "brings in" a substitute teacher. Sometimes it's Hilga from Germany or Wing Wong from China, but behind the funny hat, wig, and accent, it's always Laurie. With a twinkle in her eye, she teaches half a day about two times a semester as a different persona, using alternate teaching methods to pique her students' interests and give them a little extra reason to love learning, which they definitely do.

Laurie began homeschooling about four years ago, drawing upon her faith in God and inspiration from her earthly father, a Christian educator for the past 30 years. According to Laurie's husband, Andy, a pastor, Laurie gets her passion for teaching not only from her dad, but also from her conviction that she has a responsibility to lead her girls to the truth, both in the classroom and in their faith.

July Parent of the MonthRecently, Laurie reached out to a boy from her church whose family life and education needed a little extra attention and guidance. Seven-year-old Ben joined the Rodriguez classroom last fall, not yet reading and slipping in math. By the end of the school year, however, Ben was not only picking up books and sounding out words, but he was also proving to be a whiz with numbers. Laurie's offer to homeschool the boy was a blessing to Ben and his family.

Larissa and Kaitlyn adore being homeschooled by their mom, whom they can always count on to keep learning interesting. New homemade board games are regularly added to the curriculum, including one in which the object is to get a polar bear back to his home in the ocean by correctly counting clumps of trees in a forest. Her standard teaching curriculum is eclectic, including a mix of curriculum from Switched-On Schoolhouse and Horizons.

"This year my kids told me they didn't want a summer break. They wanted to keep going!" Laurie said. "All that I am I owe to the grace of God, and anything I have accomplished is a result of His direct interaction with my life."

Creativity and generosity are this homeschooling mom's strengths, and she dedicates every day to inspiring her two girls in learning through the help of Christ. For her talents and big heart, Alpha Omega Publications is pleased to name Laurie Rodriguez as July's Homeschool Parent of the Month.
