Homeschooler Offers Advice About Transition to College

As many homeschoolers complete their home education this month, one former homeschooler offered some advice based on her transition from homeschool to college.

Lexi Jasen is a senior at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, a 50-year-old public university with an enrollment of approximately 7,000 students. The education major will soon graduate from college with honors. She thanked her mom for giving her freedom in her high school education.

“My mom gave me a lot of control as far as planning my own curriculum and my schedule, as long as she approved it,” Jasen said. “She knew I would be very responsible and I would get it done.”

However, that freedom meant that Jasen needed to be open to change as she adjusted to different classes and a variety of professors.

“The hardest thing for me is the actual sitting in class,” she said.

Jasen credited her professors for their guidance in making her transition to college successful and stressed the importance of open communication with professors to other homeschooled students.

“The homeschoolers that I know and grew up with are kind of like me and they know how they learn and they know what they need in order to succeed,” she said. “The more I communicated that with my professors, the more successful I was in those classes, and I think that that is something a lot of people are really hesitant to do.”
