How to Read with a Beginning Reader

Whether you and your child enjoy a fascinating chapter book series or picture books, there are so many books you should read to your child. However, there comes a time to hand off the book to your child’s lap. As you start the transition to your child reading, remember to choose books that match his or her likes and interests and recognize that 15-20 minutes is a good amount of time for a rookie reader. In addition, here are five other practical tips for how to read with a beginning reader:

1. Encourage your child to use his/her finger to point to each word.

2. Read a sentence and have your child repeat it.

3. Take turns reading a sentence or a page.

4. Talk about the story as you read it and ask questions to check for understanding.
* What do you think will happen next?
* How do you think this character feels?
* Does this story remind you of another book, movie, or event in your life?

5. Don’t be afraid to read the same book again! Repeated reading builds reading fluency.
