Hybrid Homeschooling Receives National Hype

Homeschooling continues to grow in popularity in the United States with hybrid homeschooling garnering the latest national hype.

Defined as splitting time between homeschool and a traditional school environment, hybrid homeschooling may be the answer to help families (like Jessica Mendoza’s) that desire to homeschool but don’t feel ready or able to immediately jump into the deep end of homeschooling. According to Mike McShane, a contributor for Forbes, 7% of families would choose homeschooling if they could, but currently only 3% do.

“For many families, the costs and obligations related to homeschooling are simply too burdensome,” McShane wrote. “Some parents don’t have the confidence in their own abilities to teach every subject to their children. Others cannot devote themselves to homeschooling full-time.”

In particular, McShane is interested in following hybrid homeschoolers because it offers an opportunity for parents to take advantage of new technologies and resources, while still providing a school experience that some parents still want for their children.

“Hybrid homeschools offer the potential to reap the benefits of parent-driven instruction with the benefits that traditional schooling environments supply,” he wrote.

While plenty of questions surround how current education policies could be affected by a widespread hybrid homeschool model, McShane doesn’t think the trend is going away anytime soon.

“It’s clear from even a cursory look at hybrid homeschooling,” wrote McShane, “that it is growing and likely to become a larger and larger part of the educational ecosystem in our country as time moves forward.”
