Robb Phillips
As a pastor of a mission church he and his family founded in an economically challenged neighborhood, Pastor Robb Phillips fills the role of father figure for far more children than the six he has at home.

Recognizing the need for guidance amongst the youth of his neighborhood, Robb regularly gives local latchkey kids free transportation to church, where they receive a free meal and an extra helping of spiritual food. In fact, he occasionally even takes a phone call from a church member during his job with a local public school, where he teaches students with mental and physical handicaps.

When Robb isn't ministering or teaching classes, he helps his wife, Maralena, homeschool their six children: Wesley, 14, Hannah, 12, twins Ben and Carter, 11, and twins Cara and Becca, 7. Using Switched-On Schoolhouse curriculum, Robb and Maralena share teaching duties while balancing time with each other and their children.

While Maralena works with the children during the day, Robb's role in reinforcing their education is sitting down with them after school and answering questions about their assignments, and although he enjoys seeing good scores, above all, he wants the concepts he teaches to make sense.

"Check for understanding," he said. "I take the attitude of ‘show me what you can do' rather than ‘this is what you have to do.'"

Robb attributes his family's homeschooling success to God, the user-friendly features and solid content of Switched-On Schoolhouse, and his children's love for learning.

"Character is the main thing, and education is second," he said. "They dig into school with enthusiasm and curiosity. The key is we always seek the Lord first."

Like Robb's story, tell us why you think your friend should be chosen as AOP's Homeschool Parent of the Month. What makes him/her stand out as a spectacular homeschool parent? How many years and how many children has he/she homeschooled? How does he/she show concern or support for his/her family and other homeschoolers? Is he/she actively involved in his/her community and church? How has he/she personally touched your homeschooling family? Include a photo (optional) and information in 250 words or less that tells us how this individual stands apart as an extraordinary homeschooling parent.

If chosen, your nominee will be awarded a $50 AOP gift certificate that's good toward the purchase of any AOP homeschool curriculum or resource. Don't let this opportunity to recognize a fellow homeschooler pass you by. Submit your nominee today!
