Leading Your Child to Christ

One of the most rewarding aspects of homeschooling is having the privilege of leading your children to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. Although we tend to focus much of our attention on the academic subjects in homeschooling, no other aspect of what we do as parents can influence our children's future as much as telling our children the spiritual truth of who Jesus is and what He has done for us. All the math, grammar, and knowledge of science cannot replace the foundation for their lives of having a personal relationship with the Lord and Creator of the universe.

So, how do we as Christian parents teach this most important aspect of our children's education? Prayer is our power, and Scripture is our sword to show the truth of God's Word and how it applies to our children's lives. Many mediums can be used to share the gospel, such as the wordless book, the Gospel hand, Bible lessons, videos, and even songs. However, my favorite used with my own children was the following acronym for the word
G-O-S-P-E-L.

G - God is the Creator. - Children need to understand that God not only made them, but that He loves them as well. Focus on presenting different aspects that describe His nature, such as holy, all-knowing, unchangeable, all-powerful, and others. Then, use a Scripture verse that illustrates each particular characteristic.

O - Jesus is the only begotten Son of God. - Your children should know that Jesus was without any sin of His own and was perfect in every way (2 Corinthians 5:21). They should also learn that Jesus was both God and man (John 1:1, 14).

S - We all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. - Conviction of sin only comes through the Holy Spirit's power. Share verses like Romans 3:23, Isaiah 53:6, and Romans 3:10 and give specific examples of sin that relate to your children's ages. Tell your children that we sin because we were born into sin (Romans 5:12), and we sin because we are sinners by choice. Most importantly, teach your children that our sin separates us from God (Isaiah 59:2).

P - The precious blood of Jesus saves us. - Nothing we can do is good enough to be saved from our sins. Isaiah 64:6b says, "All our righteousnesses are as filthy rags," and Hebrews 9:22b adds, "Without shedding of blood is no remission." As you share how Christ suffered and died on the cross, make sure you also tell of His resurrection on the third day. Also, tell of the home in heaven He is now preparing for all who love Him (John 14:1-3) and His return to Earth for all who believe in Him.

E - Eternal life is received by believing in Jesus' work on the cross. - Give a personal invitation to your children to receive Christ as their Savior. Use an invitation verse such as John 1:12: "But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name." Your children may need help in praying and asking Jesus to come into their lives. Make sure they understand that it is not the prayer that saves them, but believing in what Jesus has done for them. In addition, ask questions like, "What has Jesus just done for you?" Their responses will help you determine if they have a clear understanding of accepting Christ's forgiveness.

L - Live your life for Jesus and what He has done for you. - Just as all things grow, teach your children to grow in Christ. "But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ" (2 Peter 3:18). Let them begin by telling someone else what Jesus has just done for them and lead them to an assurance of salvation verse such as Hebrews 13:5c: "I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee." Using Bible curriculum in your homeschool like Monarch™, Switched-On Schoolhouse®, and LIFEPAC® can also show them how to memorize Bible verses to learn how God wants them to live.

No matter how old your children are, your responsibility as a homeschooling parent is to keep presenting the message of the Gospel to them each day. After all, you never know when the Holy Spirit will lead them to an understanding of this saving truth. What joy there will be when they do make that decision for themselves!

This is an excellent way to present the gospel to everyone! I like acronyms to help me remember things.

I serve on the Pastoral Care team in our church and often find opportunities to share the gospel at times when the Bible is not always available. I plan to study the material and incorporate it into the way I present the gospel to adults and kids.

Blessings!
