New Homeschool Financial Aid Guidelines in Virginia

The State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) recently approved new guidelines that allow homeschool students to be eligible for financial aid. Previously, only public and private high school students were eligible for funds through the Virginia Guaranteed Assistance Program by having at least a 2.5 GPA. The new measures change the language to allow all students (public, private, and homeschooled) to submit SAT scores of 900 and above or ACT scores of 19 and above in order to fulfill the academic requirements for eligibility. If approved, homeschool students from low-income families will receive financial aid to cover college tuition, fees, and books.

"This law creates the bridges necessary for homeschooled students to be considered," said Lee Andes, assistant director for financial aid at SCHEV. "I think it's a good thing for homeschooled students."
