Sizzling Summer Ideas

Summer is here, and it's time to get outdoors! Add something new to your homeschooling day and turn those homeschool doldrums into summer fun with these inexpensive, memory-making activities:

Sand Art - Great for all ages, this simple craft can be done outdoors at the picnic table and only requires sand, glue, food coloring, zip lock bags, paper plates, and heavy card stock. To start, add several drops of food coloring to a small amount of clean sand in a plastic bag. Mix to coat the sand and pour the colored sand on paper plates to dry in the sun. Once dry, alternate between the glue and sand to create a multi-colored masterpiece.

Coin Hunts - Collect the loose change you find lying around the house and set a pre-determined area outside in which to hunt. Hide your treasure and let your children find the goods. If you have several kids, divide them into teams and race to see who finds the most treasure.

Water Games - Cool off on a hot summer day with one of these refreshing challenges:

Bird Tours - Create a handout with photos of birds common to your area. Then, let your homeschoolers search and check off the list of each feathered friend they find in the backyard or park. (Bring binoculars if you have them!) Give extra points if they find a feather on the ground that belongs to the bird.

Way-Out Golf - Forget expensive mini-golf courses. Set up buckets and tin cans around your backyard instead. Use an assortment of ball sizes and unusual clubs like yardsticks or baseball bats and let each member of your homeschool family try for a hole in one.

Obstacle Course - Grab lawn chairs, appliance boxes, boards, ropes, flower pots, saw horses, and any other garage item that will work to create a homemade obstacle course. Show your children how to run the course and use a stopwatch to see who can make it through in the quickest time.

Scavenger Hunts - Reinforce what your children have been learning throughout the year with scavenger hunts that relate to a particular subject.

    • Science - Find a certain genus or species of flowers or insects.
    • Math - Find objects that have symmetry or resemble geometric shapes.
    • History - Find items that would not have existed during Roman times.
    • Language Arts - Go from A to Z and find items that begin with each letter of the alphabet.
