Texas Set to Celebrate Homeschoolers with Leeper Day

The state of Texas is set to celebrate homeschoolers on June 9, declaring it as Leeper Day in honor of the landmark court decision in 1994 that ruled that parents had the right to teach their children at home.

Texas is known as one of the most favorable states for homeschooling. Currently, there are over 120,000 homeschool families in Texas, equaling about 300,000 children. However, the state was not homeschool friendly before the Leeper v. Arlington ISD court ruling. According to Brietbart News, “Homeschool families not only faced criminal charges for truancy but also lived with the real threat of having their children taken away from them.”

Jube Dankworth, a member of the Board of Directors for Texas Home Educators, hopes that the special day will be used by homeschoolers to recognize how they’ve been blessed by the 21-year-old decision.

“We hope that groups all over Texas will take this day to reflect on how far we have come in this short time,” said Dankworth.

In his official announcement of Leeper Day, Texas Governor Greg Abbott commended homeschool parents for their commitment to educating their children.

“In Texas, we believe families should be empowered to choose the best educational environment for their children,” wrote Abbott. “The ultimate parent involvement is giving parents more choices in choosing the school that is right for their child.”

No matter what state you live in, how can your family celebrate Leeper Day?
