The Most Desired Mother’s Day Gift Is…

According to a 2016 RetailMeNot survey, a nice meal topped the list of the most desired Mother’s Day gifts followed by gift cards and a day free of responsibilities.

“If our data reveals anything, it’s that moms like a gift with meaning,” advised the survey conducted by RetailMeNot, which maintains a collection of coupon web sites. “So put some thought, time, and energy into what you’re giving her.”

Despite its top ranking, the gift of a nice meal came with a warning for dads and children considering the popular gift.

“Remember: You aren’t doing Mom any favors if you leave a messy kitchen,” the survey clarified. “Don’t even think about letting her touch a sponge!”

Flowers, jewelry, and candy were common gifts that surprisingly didn’t make moms excited. However, they still ranked higher than the “steer clear” categories of housewares and electronics.

“Nothing says, ‘I love you, Mom,’ like a new set of headphones—said no one, ever,” quipped RetailMeNot. “Unless she specifically asks for them, things like electronics, housewares, clothing, candy, jewelry, and flowers are better left as birthday presents.”

Despite many mothers’ preferred gifts being highly affordable, the National Retail Federation reported that the average American still spent nearly $175 on Mom in 2015, amounting to approximately 3-dozen roses or 120 chocolate truffles.
