Top 5 Homeschooling Fears

“When Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?” (Matthew 14:29b-31)

Like Peter, you may be ready to take a leap of faith and begin homeschooling, but in the back of your mind, you have your doubts about how you’re going to react when you begin to face obstacles. To keep you focused on the end result of God-fearing children, take a lighthearted look at the top 5 homeschooling fears and how you can overcome them.

1. Is homeschooling expensive?
If you need a forklift to get out of the parking lot with all of your purchases, it may be time to let Dad handle the shopping, but if you shop the sales and stick with swiping your library card more often than your credit card, homeschooling can be totally affordable.

2. Can I maturely handle the inevitable socialization question?
While it may be hard to hold your tongue while total strangers imply that you're grooming your kids to be hermits, you’ll soon learn that the more you get the question, the easier it is to answer. In fact, you may actually find it fun to speak with the incredulous person still in shock that your children actually speak.

3. Will my OCD survive the stacks of paper on the kitchen table?
Don't quite remember what shade of wood your table is under all the books and art projects? Rest assured, someday when you’re an empty nester, you can again neatly place everything exactly where you want it. In the mean time, do your best to enjoy the stage of life you’re in and think of your home not as a mess but as a place full of life.

4. Will people I just meet judge me?
Homeschooling has gained credibility in recent years, thanks in large part to studies showing that homeschooled kids are often brighter and more well-rounded than kids confined to a desk and rote memorization. Give strangers the benefit of the doubt if you're asked to share your family's decision. In many cases, people who aren't familiar with homeschooling will be more curious than judgmental and more intrigued rather than biased. Take care not to put too much stock in what others think and concentrate on doing what's best for your family.

5. How often will I fail in front of your kids?
A lot! However, when your child finds out that you’re a creative (but not necessarily accurate) speller, take the opportunity to point out to your child that God gave us all different gifts, strengths, and weaknesses, and life wouldn’t be much of a challenge if we mastered everything we attempted. You might even make a list together of areas in which you can each improve.

Don't let fear stop you from stepping out in faith in your homeschooling venture. God is mighty, and He will go before you and help you accomplish great things for His glory. "Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not" (Jeremiah 33:3).
