Vaccination Law Leads Parents to Homeschool

A new California law that requires public school students to be vaccinated is leading some parents to choose homeschooling for their children.

According to KCBS-TV in San Francisco, the bill excludes homeschoolers from the vaccination requirements, which has led parents to explore the option of homeschooling due to their opposition of the shots.

“It will be the greatest gift that could possibly happen to them, the state forcing them into feeling that they need to home school their children,” said Rose Vasquez, a homeschool mom living in the North San Francisco Bay Area. “They’ll homeschool and they’ll look back and say, why didn’t I do this sooner?”

Proponents of the bill, meanwhile, cite a desire to avoid cases like the measles outbreak at Disneyland, which was just recently declared over, and stress the importance of the vaccinations.

“When you go to school, there are certain requirements you need to meet,” said California Senator Richard Pan. “Those requirements are there to protect not just the individual, but the people around them.”
