Ways to Involve Your Kids in Gift Giving

For children (and adults), there’s a natural excitement that comes with the idea of opening their own presents. However, flipping the script and getting them just as enthusiastic about giving gifts can take a little effort. Here are a few things you can do this holiday season to involve your kids in gift giving.

Share Your Budget
By showing the kids your budget for the holiday season, they can learn a very practical lesson in just how far your money can (or cannot) go. It can also teach them that the thought behind the gift has more significance than the price tag.

Know the Person
Involve your children in the process of determining gifts that need to be purchased. Often even our own inclinations are to think of things we would like, yet by challenging ourselves to think of the interests of others, we’re much more likely to achieve the goal of a gift the receiver will appreciate.

Make Your Own Gifts
For young kids without money of their own, it’s easy for them to find joy in making use of what they do have by coloring a page or creating a homemade card. Let’s face it. As parents, those items end up far closer to our hearts than so many other cards whose fate is the recycling bin. Homemade Christmas treats are another way to spend time together making your own creations.

Deliver the Goods
While it can be fun to leave a surprise without a trace, your children are more likely to long remember the experience if they can deliver the present in person and revel in the joy it brings to someone else’s face.

Volunteer
At this time of year, it’s easy to get lost in the little worlds of our own families. Outside of that bubble, there are many opportunities to show our kids how truly blessed they are and how good they really have it. The holiday season is a great time to remember those who have recently lost a loved-one and sacrifice your own schedule to spend time with them. You can also look for volunteer ideas that could open your child’s eyes right in your own neighborhood.
