Consumer Mathematics is a life skills course that introduces students to the concept of financial literacy with practical applications to consumer concepts. Many of the math concepts students have studied or are currently studying in core courses will be applied to consumer math scenarios, providing opportunities to apply math concepts to real financial scenarios.

The Consumer Mathematics Teacher’s Guide provides answer keys to all unit questions, as well as Self Tests and Unit Tests. Consumer Mathematics Unit 2 introduces students to the concept of creating a budget, developing a savings and investment plan, identifying insurance to protect against financial risks, and concepts of organizing personal finances.

Consumer Mathematics 7 introduces students to their rights as consumers, both in purchasing products and services and in banking. Students also explore their responsibilities as consumers, learning about the psychology behind advertising techniques and the impact of the choices they make as consumers.

Consumer Mathematics Unit 3 introduces students to different types of financial institutions, the benefits of banking, and the services, tools, and resources offered by banks and credit unions. Students learn how to open a checking account and about resources typically provided through online banking.

Consumer Mathematics Unit 6 introduces students to different types of loans, types of interest rates, how to calculate portion of repayment going to interest, and additional repayment considerations. Students also learn about different types of mortgage loans, associated interest rate variables, and tools to calculate portion of repayment going to interest and principal over time.

Consumer Mathematics Unit 1 introduces students to the concepts of financial literacy, career planning, and income. Students will learn the definition of financial literacy and be introduced to the concept of setting personal financial goals and developing and following a financial plan.
