Famous Homeschool Athletes

With the benefit of learning at their own pace, homeschool athletes often have the benefit of extra time to hone their extracurricular skills. Learn more about five famous homeschool athletes that have risen above the competition.

Venus and Serena Williams
Between the two of them, these tennis star sisters have amassed 30 Grand Slam tournament singles titles in their sports’ premier events, as well as another 14 titles as doubles partners. The sisters were homeschooled from elementary through high school.

Tim Tebow
A former Heisman Trophy winner as the nation’s best collegiate football player, Tebow started 16 games in the NFL, but he is currently playing Minor League Baseball in the New York Mets organization. Tebow was recently named an All-Star in the Eastern League, which is two steps away from the Major Leagues. Last year, Tebow wrote a book for homeschoolers.

Jamie Anderson
A two-time Olympic champion in snowboarding slopestyle, Anderson was homeschooled along with her seven brothers and sisters. In a 2016 feature on Today, Jamie’s mom Lauren said, “There wasn’t a big push for them to read and write and do arithmetic. I wanted them to learn how to get along and let life be the teacher. Character-building was more important than academics.”

Simone Biles
Labeled by some as the best female gymnast ever, Biles won four gold medals at the 2016 Summer Olympics. She began homeschooling in high school to advance to an elite level of gymnastics. “I decided that I wanted to be better,” Biles said.

Blake Griffin
Although Griffin attended a private high school (where he won 4 state basketball championships in Oklahoma), he was homeschooled through until seventh grade. Known for his gravity-defying dunks, Griffin has played 8 seasons in the NBA after before chosen as the #1 overall pick in the 2009 NBA draft.
