Refining scissors skills is an excellent way to improve fine motor skills. Before your homeschooler jumps into the exercises below, devote some time to developing basic fine motor skills and practicing proper scissors grip. Then, print these free scissors skills worksheets and let your child cruise through the cutting courses.
4 Ways to Strengthen Fine Motor Skills
1. Use the thumb and index paper to tear paper into small pieces for a craft.
2. Practice spinning a top.
3. Paint with watercolors using an eyedropper.
4. Make a fun craft that involves pinching clothespins and placing them around the edge of a paper plate.
Practice Proper Scissors Grip
1. Rest the thumb inside the smaller scissors loop just beyond the first knuckle joint. Turn the wrist so the thumbnail points up.
2. Place the middle finger through the opposite loop. If the ring finger also fits inside this loop, place it there as well.
3. Rest the index finger outside the larger loop and use it as a guide while cutting.
4. Curl the pinkie finger into the palm of the hand. If the ring finger does not fit inside the scissors loop, it should follow suit here.
