Homeschool Dad Gaining Steam in Bid for House Speaker

Rep. Daniel Webster, a homeschool father of 27 years, is gaining steam as a long-shot bid to be the next Speaker of the United States House of Representatives.

Known for his commitment to positive campaigning, Webster has received significant headlines for winning the endorsement of conservative Republicans in the House. The 66-year-old previously held the same position in Florida, where his political career began, and his experience in the Sunshine State may be what separates him from his challengers.

“Webster became the first Republican Speaker of the Florida House in 122 years,” wrote J.C. Derrick in an article for the Christian news magazine WORLD. “While in Florida, the chamber followed the rules, considered bills in alphabetical order of each committee, and finished work at 6 p.m. every day. Both parties cheered.”

If elected to be the next Speaker of the House, Webster said he wants to get Congress back to the way things should work.

“In Luke 22, the disciples got into an argument over who would be the greatest,” he said. “Jesus said don’t try to be the greatest by being powerful. Become the greatest by serving people.”

A vote for speaker is set for October 29. A majority of 218 members is needed to win the election.

Current House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, who was considered to be the favorite for the position that is second in the presidential line of succession, unexpectedly withdrew his name from consideration.
