School Choice Week Shines Spotlight on Homeschoolers

Across the country, local news stations are highlighting homeschool families as part of their coverage of National School Choice Week.

A nonpartisan, nonpolitical effort, National School Choice Week is celebrating its 5th year of raising awareness and shining a positive spotlight on effective education options for every child. Held during the week of January 24-30, this year’s festivities are being heralded as the largest series of education-related events in U.S. history, featuring rallies at 20 state capitol building and totaling over 16,000 events across all 50 states.

“Not every kid fits in the box,” said Stacey Riggle in an interview with WHNT News in Huntsville, Alabama. “Public school works for a lot of people, but there are a lot of kids that fail to thrive in that situation, and they need options.”

Kristen Nance, a mother of three children, told the Alabama news station that one of the reasons she enjoys homeschooling is the freedom to choose her own curriculum.

“I know their strengths and weaknesses better than anyone else,” she said. “Therefore, I can teach them based on that. What do we need to work on more? What do they really like?”

Meanwhile, KX News focused on how a North Dakota family with six children incorporates their faith into their homeschooling.

“My siblings are my best friends, and most of my Christian life has come from my parents,” said homeschool student Lydia Hoverson. “I’ve really learned a lot from them, and I’ve gotten to know them very well.”
