Spring Home Maintenance Guide Checklist

After a long winter of indoor hibernation, spring cleaning is a popular (if not necessary) spring tradition. While it’s easy to see the living areas of your home in need of attention, there are some often overlooked areas that also require attention. Use the moderate temperatures and this spring home maintenance guide checklist to make sure your home is in top shape for another year.

1. Clean Gutters and Downspouts
Keeping your gutters and downspouts free of clogs from leftover leaves from autumn or spring’s helicopter seeds is an important way to protect your home from water damage.

2. Inspect Roof and Chimney
Ice and snow buildup can lead to damage that leads to leaks and heat loss.

3. Touch Up Paint
Preserve and maintain your home’s appearance by touching up worn or peeling paint on siding, fences, and sheds.

4. Fertilize the Lawn and Touch Up Mulch
Pay special attention to spots that look dead or damaged and make sure to purchase the correct fertilizer.

5. Clean or Change HVAC Filters
Replacing or changing air filters is an affordable way to keep indoor air quality fresh and help with allergies.

6. Check Foundation for Leaks and Cracks
Survey your foundation for any signs of moisture that can lead to mold and other larger issues.

7. Clean Windows and Install Screens
Brighten up your home by giving your windows and tracks a good shine. Give the screens a rinse and repair as needed before installing them to enjoy some refreshing spring breezes.

8. Check the Attic
Take a look under your home’s hood to check for any moisture or leaks.

9. Check Door and Window Locks
Check for loose knobs or screws and replace as necessary to keep your home locked up safely.

10. Examine Tree Branches and Landscaping
Trim branches and landscaping to keep clear of gutters, downspouts, and air conditioners.

11. Test Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors
Replace batteries as needed. Some fire departments inspect and even install new fire alarms for free.

12. Check Clothes Dryer Vent
Over time, lint can build up in your clothes dryer’s vent pipe. Clean out the pipe of any debris and check the exterior vent for damage or blockage.
