Unseen Evils (Part 1)

"Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness."(Isaiah 41:10)

I share this story because it was one of the most bizarre experiences I had as a young homeschooling parent. With four children under the age of eight, we had been homeschooling for only two years; but already I could see the wonderful closeness that it had brought to our family. I truly loved discovering new things with my children and knew that we had made the right choice to home educate.

After surviving harassment from school authorities and family members, I had no idea there would be other forces fighting against our homeschooling. Just when I thought we were on our way, something strange began to happen to our family physically. I noticed it first in me and then in my 1 year old toddler. About thirty minutes after we ate each meal, we felt sick to our stomachs and experienced illness. Each day, the problem grew worse. At first, I laughed off the weight loss that I was experiencing by saying, "This is great!", but every day I felt weaker. I could see my young son losing weight too and had no idea what was wrong with us. My other children and husband displayed similar symptoms, but not of the same severity as ours. After trying many types of over-the-counter remedies, we decided it was time for a visit to the doctor.

Several visits and multiple tests revealed no cause for our continued loss of weight and chronic sickness. Strangely, the only viable answer the doctors provided was colitis due to nerves. I found this diagnosis disconcerting, however, since I wasn't the nervous type and it didn't seem to relate to my young son. Second opinions provided no alternative answers; and since I was too weak to teach, our homeschooling came to a standstill. Can you imagine the heartbreak I felt as I fell on my knees and prayed, "Lord, my family is wasting away right before my very eyes; what is the matter with us?"

(To be continued)

Father,

Every day we face forces of darkness that would destroy us. Thank You for Your loving protection in the midst of every difficulty. In Jesus' name, Amen.
