7 Simple Questions to Ask After Watching Super Bowl Ads

Although you may be gathering with family and friends to watch this year’s Super Bowl, that certainly doesn’t mean that everything on your television that evening can be deemed family-friendly. Including the halftime show and ads, your children will be exposed to more than just the biggest football game of the year.

To help you critically think about ads and apply your faith to the marketing messages we face on Super Bowl Sunday and every day, the Center for Parent/Youth Understanding created a list of ad filtering questions to review as a family this year.

The Simple Seven

1. What product is this ad selling?

2. What, besides the product, does this ad sell? (ideas, lifestyle, worldview, behaviors, etc.)

3. What’s the bait, hook, and promise?

4. Complete this sentence: “This ad tells me, use _____ (the name of the product) and _____ (the result the ad promises).

5. Does the ad tell the truth? What does the ad say and how do they say it?

6. Does the ad tell a lie or lies? If so, what is the lie and how do they say it?

7. How does this ad and its messages agree or disagree with God’s truth and what does that mean for me?
